Something Fabulous!

CineMoms recently caught up with beloved author and Atlanta resident, Emily Giffin, at the premiere of SOMETHING BORROWED, the new film which is based on her best selling novel. This cult figure of female fiction was walking the red carpet at Regal Atlantic Station accompanied by producer Molly Mickler Smith, who produced the film along with business partner Hilary Swank for their new production company, 2SFilms. A mom of 3 (she has 7 year old twins and a 3 year old) Emily dishes about seeing her book brought to life on the big screen, the casting and her kid’s reaction to the film’s movie trailer.
How is it seeing your book on the big screen? Is it everything you thought it would be?
EG: It's much more than I thought it would be. I was universally warned by my inner professional circle of agents, publicists and editor that I would likely not like the movie and certainly not be involved. And here I am with Molly Smith, the fabulous producer.. She did The Blind Side...
MMS: They tell producers not to get involved with the authors because it can get a little messy...
EG: I think she invited me to dinner during The Blind Side and I was very tentative at first, but I knew I loved her within 5 minutes of sitting with her...we had so much fun developing this together. It really surpassed any expectations I had...it's just been surreal and so thrilling.
After the premiere in LA, I called Molly and said I have never been on the verge of happy tears before. To have this whole thing happen is a miracle and to actually like the movie, well you know..I love the movie.
Does the casting live up to your expectations? EG: The cast is perfect. As the writer, I feel the characters were multi-dimensional, real and layered. And it's a very hard thing when you are casting to capture all those qualities because you are writing about a completely fictional person. You make up their looks, and they matched so well. Meeting Ginnifer Goodwin, I can honestly say I had this disorienting feeling that it was Rachel, and the same for John Krasinski.
MMS: And we got lucky to because we got our top choice. We saw Kate Hudson as Darcy and we could not see anyone else. Emily and I must have had 400 phone calls saying "we have to get Kate to do this" and the minute I met her, I left Kate's house and called Emily and was like that's it...we've got our Darcy.
EG: And Kate just nails it in this. She really goes for it. She really deserves a lot of credit for making this movie work, but everyone does. There was a lot of chemistry. The same way the behind the camera chemistry happened, it really happens on screen as well.
Emily, when you wrote the book, did you see yourself as a "Darcy" or a "Rachel", or are you a combination?
EG: She (Molly) is Darcy. I'm a little bit of a blend. But I have friends that are even more Darcy.
What do your kids think of all of this? EG: My children have been so excited about the whole process from top to bottom, but they are obsessed with the Ramona and Beezus movie, and when they first saw the trailer, they said "Aunt Bea (Ginnifer Goodwin) is in your movie and she grew her hair." It's very cute. They are excited. They can't see a PG-13 movie, but they know Aunt Bea is in it.
